It wasn’t too long ago when the SEO world began the trend of publishing article after article, in high hopes of a new ranking technique. It spread like wild-fire, and pretty soon the online world was saturated with content from field ‘experts’ who enjoyed seeing their name in print. The results: an avalanche of information (some useful and some not) in an amateur style that’s almost impossible to read.

It’s like a disease. Poor grammar, misspelling, and pages full of content with no logical order or word flow (not to mention no point) are creeping into even the most professional sites. And where does this leave the info seeking browsers who hold the buying potential? They find an article on plant growth, get half way through it, and back click because it’s taking too long to read.

Even the webmasters who are willing to pay for professional writers find it increasingly harder to find good professional writers. Go to a site like Elance.com, and you’ll meet thousands of part timers who dabble in the art of word painting, but who have little training and experience.

All this time, the search engines are finding new inventive ways to filter out the ‘bad content’. It’s even rumored that Google now uses a spell check system. So now the trend is swaying. Maybe stuffing a site with useless content isn’t such a great idea.

When will they get it?

This illustrates one of the most powerful lessons in online marketing. Forget the trends and concentrate on sales. Articles are great when they make a customer more comfortable with your company. They’re also great when they inform and introduce a sales pitch…like this one. But publishing articles for the sake of publishing articles will do absolutely nothing for your ranking…and it will harm your conversions.
