Home OfficeOffice or Home Office?

Before I start this article, let me set something straight. I’m writing to those folks who are in a situation like mine…and this piece won’t apply to everyone. It’s for those people with children who are trying to decide if working away from the distractions (in an office building instead of a special room in their house) will help them accomplish more. So if the shoe fits…wear it.

In my own Home Office Experience

Ok, now that I’ve singled out my target audience, I’ll tell you a story. One about the time I had silence (silence is a commodity in a house with six children). It was while Grandma had the kids and the wife was out shopping. One whole day to write three articles. Shouldn’t be too hard. Right? Wrong.

I stared hopelessly at the blinking cursor on my monitor waiting for the words to come. When nothing did, I put my fingers on the keyboard and started typing. Whatever came out would have to do, because I had zoned out for two hours, and I was working under a deadline.

After typing two pages (it took much longer than it normally does) I got up to get some coffee. Returning to my work, I sat down and read over everything. AHHH! It was garbage. Just a bunch of drivel, and none of it made sense. It was time to start from scratch again. Back to square one.

I did all this several times, before giving up. I waited for the kids to come home (my wife wouldn’t come home until late that night). Working between drink and food requests, dirty diapers, and pulling kids down from high places, I managed to squeeze out all three articles inside of two and a half hours. Amazing, huh? All those distractions are what keeps my mind rolling.

The Good and Bad of Home Offices

All that being said, let’s make a list of the pro’s for working at an office building vs. The pro’s for working from home:

Office Buildings- 5 pros

  1. Less distractions
  2. You won’t have to explain to anyone that you’re actually at work
  3. You won’t have to justify your noon nap to anyone
  4. You won’t have to worry about someone else cleaning (or destroying) your work area
  5. You won’t have to worry about background noise when you answer the phone

Home Office- 5 pros

  1. You get to hang out with your family
  2. You get to hang out with your family
  3. You get to hang out with your family
  4. You get to hang out with your family
  5. You get to hang out with your family
