Business Marketing Strategy
A Replacement for Hope
As a copywriter, my services are often used in new business start-ups. They might need brochures, a website, press releases, etc…all of which I write. And I can usually tell you after my first conversation with such clients which ones will succeed and which ones will taper off to nothing. It never seems to matter how much of a demand there is for their service or product. Their level of success always boils down to one question:
“What’s Your Business Marketing Strategy?”
In most cases, a new business starts because someone suddenly comes up with an idea. And at the conception of this idea, that person is motivated and full of hope. They can’t wait to get their product or service in motion. They’re anxious to go public…sometimes before they’re prepared. And this is when they often overlook the fact that they need a business marketing strategy.
Why a Business Marketing Strategy is Important
There’s a simple reason why a business marketing strategy is essential…and believe it or not, it has little to do with what the strategy is. It has more to do with human nature and the way our world works.
I’m talking about the fact that business owners start out with so much hope…but outside your door, there’s a whole world ready to bring you to your knees. Anyone who wants to conquer the world faces the daunting challenge of despair. The world will crush your dreams before you ever get a taste of success. And this is where a business marketing strategy can help.
It’s in our nature to let hopes fizzle out over time. A business marketing strategy focuses on goals within a timeline, so we can continue to work on our dreams even when it seems hope is lost. When the hope has all but faded, an entrepreneur continues, not out of motivation, but because it’s part of their strategy.
The Components of a Business Marketing Strategy
Because every strategy entails two things…a course of action and a timeline. As long as we set a timeline, we can continue with the actions. Even if the actions have become ‘drudgery’ without motivation. This is the key to success – Working without hope. In other words,
“Don’t Give Up!”
I’m not saying that every business could succeed. But I can say without any hesitation that no business will succeed unless someone continues to work on it. This means working towards gaining new clients, and keeping the clients you have. Your business marketing strategies should do both.
Defining Your Business Marketing Strategy
Again, you will need to set some goals, a timeline, and how you’ll achieve those goals. A new landscaping business might use the following:
- Goal – To bring in new residential clients
- Strategy – Spend five hours each week hanging brochures on the doors of residential homes.
- Timeline – One entire season.
This is just one strategy…and it shouldn’t be the only one. Marketing strategies are most effective when combined with each other. You should always be working on at least two. And be ready to tweak them as you find out what works best. For example, you might find out that passing out brochures during the spring works better than passing them out in the summer.
Having a Backup Marketing Strategy
When you come to the end of your timeline, you’ll decide how effective it was, and whether or not to continue with it. But before that, you should have planned an alternative business marketing strategy. This way, you can immediately switch plans without giving into the “well, I guess this just isn’t working out” mentality.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to ignore the loss of hope. This world is trapped in a perpetual state of mediocrity. When you aspire for greater things, I can guarantee that someone or something will try to stop you. They will crush everything that inspires and motivates you. And there will be times when everything seems impossible. Resist, work through it, and continue through the monotonous actions. In a few years, your hopes will again thrive on the fertile ground of a well planned business marketing strategy
