Web Site Content

The Good, The Bad, The SEO Friendly

content.jpgWhy is it that web site content gets a category all of its own as a new medium? As if people would read anything just because Google brought them there. As if search engines guaranteed sticky traffic. As if high ranking, in itself, makes something interesting.

Web Site Content and My Own Experience

Last week I started working on a site selling a new kind of binding equipment (http://thermalbinding.us/). There was the usual “we need web site content” and it sent chills up my spine. I knew exactly what they were thinking. “We’ll find some dude on elance.com and pay him $5.00 per article. He’ll load the web site content up with key-phrases and we’ll get all kinds of search engine traffic. Then everyone will come to our site and buy from us…all because of our cheap web site content.”

So I called the manager and said, “Listen, I want you to try something for me. Take bowl of honey, and put an air-tight lid on it. Then set it out in the open and pour vinegar all over it. Wait and see how many flies you get.”

The manager reminded me that he could attract more flies with something very different from vinegar or honey. We laughed at that, but he did understand what I was trying to tell him.

He had a great product, worth every penny to the consumer. But he tried to entice them with poor web site content. The product, copy, and design was under an air-tight lid. Half of his visitors wouldn’t get past the SEO content because it’s written for the search engines instead of the consumers.

I couldn’t let it happen. Not to one of my clients. Not to a project that had I put so much time into. So I’m now starting a new service:

“Let me write your web site copy, and I’ll give you web site content for free.”

Ten articles rich with keywords and phrases that’ll send the search engines into a feeding frenzy. And your target audience will enjoy the web site content as much as the search engines.

Publish them one at a time, once a week, and the natural traffic will start flowing.

The alternative? Use cheap content, that doesn’t say much of anything. You’ll get traffic alright. But not sticky traffic. Not the traffic that says, “Hey, these folks know what they’re talking about.” You’ll get thousands of visitors, who’s only response to your web site content is the dreaded ‘back button’.
